Announcement Regarding the Execution of a Business Collaboration Agreement to Expand Custom Synthesis Services for Glycan-Conjugated Oligonucleotides

Hokkaido System Science Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Sapporo, Hokkaido; CEO: Yukio Mizutani; hereinafter referred to as “HSS”) is pleased to announce that it has entered into a business collaboration agreement with KH Neochem Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Michio Takahashi; hereinafter referred to as “KH Neochem”) to expand its custom synthesis services for glycan-conjugated oligonucleotides and commence related sales and marketing activities.
1. Background of the Business Collaboration
In recent years, nucleic acid therapeutics*1 have emerged as one of the most promising next-generation drug discovery modalities. As a result, research and development of technologies such as small interfering RNA (siRNA) and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) have accelerated worldwide. At the same time, the development of efficient drug delivery systems (DDS) for targeted delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics remains one of the key challenges for their practical application.
Among the various delivery strategies, glycan-mediated targeting technologies have emerged as a promising approach for achieving selective delivery to specific tissues. Consequently, demand for research and development utilizing glycan-conjugated oligonucleotides is expected to continue growing.
2. Details of the Business Collaboration
KH Neochem has been supplying highly pure, structurally well-defined and homogeneous glycans that are essential for pharmaceutical development, based on its advanced organic synthesis technologies cultivated over many years. KH Neochem provides integrated services covering glycan structure design proposals, synthesis, evaluation, and scale-up manufacturing.
Meanwhile, HSS has been engaged in the oligonucleotide synthesis business for more than 30 years, providing custom synthesis services for DNA, RNA, and various chemically modified oligonucleotides. In addition, HSS offers CRDMO*2 services that support customers throughout the entire process, from research and development to manufacturing of nucleic acid therapeutics.
Through this collaboration, KH Neochem and HSS will leverage their respective technologies and expertise in glycans and oligonucleotides to launch glycan-conjugated oligonucleotide services, in which KH Neochem’s glycans are conjugated to HSS’s oligonucleotides.
3. Future Outlook
Through this collaboration, HSS will broaden its custom synthesis service offerings for glycan-conjugated oligonucleotides. At the same time, by strengthening its business development activities for research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and other organizations, HSS will enhance its ability to meet increasingly diverse and sophisticated research and development needs.
HSS will continue to enhance its research support services by leveraging its expertise in oligonucleotide and its collaboration with KH Neochem in glycan technologies, thereby contributing to the advancement of the life sciences and accelerating the development of nucleic acid therapeutics.
